The Importance of a Writing Workspace

Whether you write for content websites like Demand Studios, your own blog, or a business, having your own writing workspace is essential to making a living as a freelance writer. Most people aren’t used to working from home in their PJs, so they’re faced with a lot of distractions. Distractions range from an obsessive need to continuously check your Google Analytics report for a new spike in search engine traffic to constant tugs on you’re arm as your 9 year old son finds something else “interesting” to tell you. Facebook happens to be at the bottom of your list, as you’re faced with even more obstacles to bypass. As a result, you can’t think, you can’t write, and you lose the ability to remain calm as frustration reaches its peak and your temper boils over.

Though a writing workspace won’t solve all of your problems, it will make it easier to pump out faster, more efficient, and better quality articles. Believe it or not, a writing workspace can make the difference between a full career writing to just writing for pocket cash.

  • A writing workspace gives you space away from the world to write. If you can set up your own office in your home as your writing workspace, you’ll have plenty of space to work and you’ll be away from distractions. You’ll also have the peace and quiet required for writing quality content.
  • A writing workspace gives you a more focused and professional environment. Because you’re working at home and you don’t have a boss looking over your shoulder, you’re more at prey to laziness. With a writing workspace, it will feel like you’re in an office environment, so you’ll be less likely to give in to distractions and more likely to stay focused on your work.
  • A writing workspace gives you more room to move around. Having a larger area to do work, even if it’s just a table in the living room, can completely change your attitude toward writing, especially since you won’t be forced to write in a cramped bedroom with a floor over cluttered with clothes.
  • You won’t have to share your space with anyone else in your own writing workspace. No one likes taking turns to use the computer or desk. With your own writing workspace, you won’t have to worry about sharing. The space is all yours for the taking. You’ll just have to convince your husband or wife to stay away and find their own writing workspace.
  • A writing workspace allows you to work long hours. If you share a bedroom with a spouse and this area is where you do the majority of your writing, it may be difficult to write at night when your significant other is just about ready to go to bed. With a writing workspace, you won’t have this problem, and you’ll be able to write for as long as you desire.
  • A writing workspace helps you to get into the habit of writing on a daily basis. Let’s face it – We all spend a majority of our time in the bedroom or living room plopped down on whatever furniture we can provide our lazy bodies. By only using the writing workspace during certain hours a day, you can get into the routine of writing regularly.

    These are great points. Having a clutter free workspace and free from distractions is the key to productivity.

    • Indeed. I used to struggle each day to bring myself to write quality content. Being in a college dorm, I also had access to tons of distractions – mainly from roommates.

      By moving schools and commuting to a college nearby my house, I was able to get the required space I needed to write. As a result, my blogs are growing in traffic and I’m able to write more for content websites.

  2. Workspace is very important not only in writing but for any kind of work. Based on my experience, it’s very hard to focus on what I’m doing if there are so many things around me and if it’s too noisy too. Too much distractions can make me out of focus. Now, I’m happy that I’ve already converted one room in our house where I can work quietly.

      I agree. Noise can become quite a distraction. Being a writer, it’s almost impossible for me to work in an area where there’s too much noise. I can only write when it’s quiet, or I can’t write at all.

      That’s why I love my office. It’s pretty sound proof as well. In fact, people have to knock on the door for me to hear them! For me, it’s an ideal place to work.

    I agree, I have been traveling a lot and working from 2 laptops and a desktop for the last few months, and that means condensing all into electronic form, and only having one large notebook. Nice place to work: by the swimming pool. Surprisingly peaceful.

    I noticed it says “reply to every post” so I should add that I have invented some productivity software, see the above site.       It’s always nice to work near the water, especially if you can get a spot on the beach or somewhere similar. The sound of waves softly crashing into each other is surprisingly peaceful, and it’s nice to change your setting every now and then when you work.

      I haven’t tried writing in front of a swimming pool, but I can imagine that it has the same or a pretty similar effect.

      By the way, I checked out your Story Lite software – very interesting. I can see how it can be useful while writing, especially if you’re a fiction writer, since you can brainstorm ideas on the same page. But what is this contest you speak of? I couldn’t find it mentioned anywhere – maybe I’m just not looking hard enough. :)
